Crises can be linked to the degradation of the environment and/or contribute to this degradation. In addition, a humanitarian response itself can have a negative impact on the environment which needs to be taken into account and minimised in accordance with the principle of “Do no harm”. On the other hand, a preserved environment can help to resolve a crisis and increase the resilience of a population.
Groupe URD works with operators and donors to help them understand these issues and ways to reduce the environmental footprint of aid in keeping with the humanitarian mandate and the commitments of the international community.
We established the Humanitarian Environment Network, which we facilitate, and which produces methodological tools and technical files.
We aim to be a model of environmental excellence ourselves, and have designed our centre in the Drôme provençale in the South of France in a way that reduces energy consumption and waste production. Since 2012, we have been assessing our greenhouse gas emissions.
