Until very recently, the environment was not considered part of the humanitarian mandate. The priority was human needs, and actors had little consideration for the environmental impact of their programmes. This no longer seems to be the case in Eastern Chad where environmental problems have become tangible, with consequences for the population. What is more, ecological solutions often converge with the objectives of humanitarian aid. Projects that are specifically aimed at environmental protection or restoration are sometimes put in place, but unfortunately their impact is insufficient.
