Za’atari camp was created in 2011 for refugees from the Syrian crisis. It is the biggest refugee camp in the region, with almost 80 000 people living there, and is gradually turning into a permanent camp. It is estimated that 750 m3 of waste is produced each week. Waste management consists of a collection system funded by international aid organisations and disposal at the local landfill site.
_ The objective of the study is to increase the amount of waste that is recycled, and consequently reduce the amount of waste that needs to be disposed of. The study establishes a more precise estimation of the quantity of waste produced each week and analyses its composition in order to establish the proportion that could be recycled. It also looks at the feasibility of recycling in both economic and financial terms.
_ Groupe URD has been evaluating the extent to which local recycling businesses are able and willing to take part in and/or implement projects designed by the camp administration. We have also been trying to identify the organisations who meet the selection criteria most fully, and the advantages and disadvantages of working with each of them.
