Real-time evaluation of the response to Storm Alex in the Alpes-Maritimes region in France

Having been moved by the disaster that took place in the Alpes-Maritimes region, we wanted to share our experience in disaster management, based on 20 years of evaluations throughout the world. And as we are based in the Drôme département, and more specifically in the river basin of the Ouvèze river, which is itself often affected by flooding, we also wanted to learn useful lessons for our valleys and the people who live here. This learning support process, which began with a real-time evaluation, will shortly be followed up with a feedback and preparedness exercise.

We began a real-time evaluation of the response with an initial visit to the Roya, Tinée and Vésubie valleys, during which we met the mayors of Breil-sur-Roya and Saint-Martin-Vésubie, as well as some of the staff involved in the response.

A second evaluation mission took place in December 2020, in order to follow the reconstruction progress.

This learning support mission in the Alpes-Maritimes region, after the extreme events caused by Storm Alex, will be followed up with a feedback session, and then by strategic reflection about the following steps and the issues at stake in the coming weeks and months.
