Evaluation of the socio-economic impact of Malian refugees on the local population in Mauritania

More than 58,000 Malians are currently in Mauritania having fled Mali since the deterioration of the security situation and the conflict in 2012. The refugees have predominantly settled in the extreme south-east of Mauritania, at the border between the two states, in a region that is isolated, arid, under-developed and subject to recurring food crises, such as those that took place in 2005, 2010 and 2012. Groupe URD was approached to evaluate the socio-economic impact of the presence of the refugees on the local, regional and cross-border economy.

In this protracted crisis context, the World Bank is assisting the Mauritanian state in establishing an inclusive approach to economic development between host communities and refugees. Groupe URD conducted a field visit in July and August 2019 to meet with the authorities, major economic players, communities and the partners working within and around Mbera camp as part of the humanitarian response and the recovery efforts in the medium and long term.

This work is funded by the State and Peacebuilding Fund (SPF) which supports development operations and critical analysis in situations of fragility, conflict and violence. The SPF is supported by Germany, Australia, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Switzerland and the BIRD.
