In October 1998, Hurricane Mitch became the first regional disaster in the history of Central America. Violent winds, floods and landslides killed 9,000 people and seriously injured 13,000 others. The storm destroyed or severely damaged 80,000 homes, leaving 300,000 people homeless. Thousands of people in this region needed emergency relief and medical assistance, and millions needed emergency humanitarian assistance.François Grunewald, Véronique de Geoffroy, Sarah Lister
