Hurricanes Mitch in Central America, Jane in Haiti and Katrina in the United States, earthquakes in El Salvador, Afghanistan, India, Morocco, Algeria, Iran and Pakistan, tsunamis (particularly that of 26 December 2004 in Asia), dramatic droughts in Africa in 2005, major floods in Europe in 2004 and 2007, in Africa and throughout Asia in 2007, the dramatic growth of forest fire phenomena in Asia (in El Niño year), Europe and the United States remind us how fragile the planet Earth is.
