“The year 2024 marks the 10th anniversary of the start of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine – the biggest war in Europe since the Second World War. The Ukrainians have just experienced the 1,000th day of war since the resumption of the conflict with the attempted invasion on 24 February 2022. The fighting is taking place on Ukrainian territory, although, as the Kremlin and the experts say, this is Russia’s war against the West, Europe’s peaceful order, its rules and its values.

As we approach the end of 2024 and the dawn of the Polish Presidency of the European Union, at a time when several European countries are going through complex political and electoral phases (France, Germany, Romania, Poland), a number of questions arise. What is the balance of power at the dawn of the new year between Ukraine and Russia? How will the results of the American presidential election influence the course of the war? How long will the Russian-Ukrainian war last and what are the possible scenarios for its end? How can Germany bring the end of the war and the establishment of a lasting peace closer together? What is the role of Ukrainian civil society inside and outside Ukraine in the run-up to victory? How can we not give in to weariness and lose our sense of urgency about the war that has changed life in Europe forever? And how do we deal with the humanitarian consequences of these different scenarios?”.
