40 years ago, after the Biafra and Vietnam decolonisation wars, two additional Protocols were added to the four Geneva Conventions of 1949 in order to meet the challenges of IHL and protection in civil wars and the new contexts that emerged after WWII. Their objective was to reinforce the protection of people in war situations, and also the rules determining the conduct of hostilities. On the 40th anniversary of these protocols, the symposium will aim to assess their relevance and their use, and new protection challenges in relation to contemporary forms of violence. Groupe URD will be taking part in the discussions.
